An update on the sharks. JCJ has spoken to NSW Fisheries and it seems that our Dusky Whalers (Carcharhinus obscurus) are probably no more than a couple of months old. The mother, or mothers, would have pupped in the area, giving birth to a max of 10 young - so maybe two mothers. The pups are born at about 2ft each.

After that she would have left the area, but would have been very hungry. A very large, hungry shark is not something you really want to be in the water with. The young are still together as they are used to each other, but as the water gets cooler they will split up and move off to warmer waters. Maybe we'll have them about for a few more weeks, maybe they will be off soon. I hope I get a chance to see them again, but three dives with them so far is great.

Do an internet search on the latin name and there is quite a bit of info about these guys above and beyond what we have been told.
