Diving from Top Gun
So as the weekend approached we awere looking forward to a couple of new dives outside of the harbour that we would be able to annoy Scott with tales of. I don't rememebr if it was Thursday night or Friday mornings weather that I was watching when I saw the big fat strong wind arrow coming across the Channel from the south east, but whichever it was I did my best to convince myself that the orientation of the coast was such that our dives would still be on and everything would be fine.
The first dives was at midday, so we could getup at a reasonable hour - more of a benefit to Sean after the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Friday night. It didn't take long for the rain to start, and by the time we got to a half empty car park at Portland the weather was really quite awful.
Half empty car park? Budgie was walking back from the quay and gave the inevitable answer to the inevitable question. Yes there are boats going out. Inside the harbour, everythign else was blown out. Not really surprised. We signed in and went to see what was available, finding that we were still booked on but were playing a bit of a lottery with the few sites open to us.
After a two and half hour drive we were not going to miss a dive, so we readied ourselves for the first one and held off on committing to a second. Lets face it, the harbour has as much silt as water and when all divers have to crowd around relatively few sites you were not going to get great vis. And with grey skies and low light it was going to be dark and shitty as opposed to a light shitty. Skills and drills dive, but hey, a dive is better than no diving, and as it turned out they were really rather good.
